The following is a
continuation of the journal section of my book "Courage: the Choice that
Makes the Difference - Your Key to a Thousand Doors," continuing from
Tuesday, November 23, 1999.
My Journal
A year in my life
I have never wanted to be anyone else. My life is the best life I know of. I am certain others may be happier, others may be richer, others may have reached
enlightenment, others may be healthier, others may have had more advantages than I, but no one has a more fascinating and adventurous life (at least for me) than I do! And many of my friends seem to agree with me on this point.
Over the course of every two to three weeks, I write an eight-page, 6,500-word journal of my life experiences and thoughts. I share it with over 60 of my friends and family members in China, Japan, Europe, Australia, and the U.S. In this section, using my journals as the source material, I open up my personal life to you. I take you from a few months before my move from California to Tokyo (when I was visiting Tokyo and made the decision to move there) and bring you up through the time when I decided to move from Tokyo to Shanghai. My friend and colleague, writer par excellence Trish Coffey, has extracted and rewritten the essential 25% of my journal entries from this time period. Because both my life and this book are about the choice of courage, we have selected mostly those portions of the journals that share about my own journey along the path of courage. Some other parts of the journals are included because we felt they were otherwise especially interesting or because they are important to the continuity of the story line.
Two technical notes: (1) When the full time and date are given, as in “10:02 p.m., Thursday, April 29, 1999,” it indicates the time that I was sitting down to write in my journal. Whereas, when the time appears without a date, as in “6:03 p.m.,” it indicates the time of the event I am describing. (2) A few names have been changed to protect privacy.
I have chosen a considerable level of courage to open up my private and sometimes intimate life so publicly to you. I invite you to participate with me in that courage with your generous and curious listening.
Please join me on my adventure now.…
